Improve Your Style By NOT Doing These 3 Things

Do you ever feel like you've lost control of your closet? So often we get caught up in habits that hinder our style, and when they build up over time, it can make it feel impossible to get dressed.

Here are three things to STOP doing to improve your style:

1. Keeping clothes that don't fit.

When you need to get dressed in the morning and you're looking through options that just don't fit you, there's no way you're leaving the house feeling your best. All this does is make you feel bad, and remind you that you're not where you want to be.

If you're in between sizes and are working towards something (you just had a baby, you gained a few during the pandemic, etc.) you can keep those clothes - but not in your closet! Put them in a bin, label the bin with what's inside, and pull them out when you're back to your normal weight. Give yourself a realistic time frame to make this happen - if years go by and they're still in the bin, it's time to reevaluate.

2. Holding onto pieces just because you spent money on them.

Consider this a sunk cost. If you aren't wearing it, that doesn't change how much you spent on it. Again, this is something that just makes you feel bad when you're going through your options. Stop getting dressed out of obligation. Try to sell it if it's in good condition, or pass it on to someone else who will love it.

Take a mental note about why you don’t wear it, and don’t make the same mistake again. Is it the color, the fabric, the way it fits? Did you buy it because it was on sale, or because it was a trend? Be aware of why you don’t love something, and make more informed choices going forward.

3. Keeping pieces you don't like just because someone gave it to you.

Your grandmother gave you that sweater, your friend bought you that necklace - if it's not your style, it doesn't belong in your closet. Your closet is precious real estate, and there's zero room for someone else's feelings in there. The only pieces that should be filling your wardrobe are those that make YOU happy. If your sister keeps buying you clothes that don't fit, or aren't your style, it might be time to have a conversation about it so she stops wasting her money and you stop feeling obligated to keep pieces you never put on.

Are you guilty of doing any of these? Which one would make the biggest difference for you if you stopped doing it?
