Walking You Through A Full Closet Edit
As we head towards the end of the year, I’ve been getting a lot of inquiries about the editing process. What is it like to have a stylist come to your home and edit with you? What’s included in the 1:1 service? Do you need to prepare beforehand, how many hours does this take, what’s the end result?
Today I’m walking you through the full process from start to finish of my most high-touch service.
When you purchase your edit, you’ll receive a welcome packet with loads of information. You’ll receive questionnaires and style profiles to fill out, a step-by-step guide of the full edit, journal prompts to complete afterward, and multiple bonus guides.
Before I make it to your house, there’s a few things for you to tackle. I recommend you go through pieces you might want to go through together, such as underwear and bras. I also ask for you to have a completely clean space so we have plenty of work space. If you have a large amount of clothes and a smaller room, we need all the surface area we can get. Clean off your nightstand, wipe down shelves, have all of your jewelry put away, wrangle all of your loose clothing, and have as much laundry done as possible. Please make sure that your phone is charged and available as we’ll be taking photos of outfit combinations you love so we can create your own personal lookbook on your phone.
When I get to your home, you’ll walk me through your space. We’ll go over all of the closets, dressers, and drawers that you utilize, and where your off-season pieces live. We’ll discuss your goals for the edit, and where you struggle with organization. It makes a huge difference to have access to your style profile before I come over so I’m familiar with some of your likes and dislikes, pain points with your closet, and any areas of discomfort with your body and style. We will designate an area for our sections of clothing to be dealt with (this usually includes donate, sell, alterations, dry cleaners, trash) and will discuss what to do with anything that is past its prime and shouldn't be donated.
As we go through your closet, you’ll pull out all of the pieces you’re questioning. Whether it’s a piece you don’t know how to wear, something you always avoid, pieces that have sentimental value, etc. We’ll also go over how to determine if something should be sold, donated, stored, or thrown out.
Sentimental items are a very tricky subject and one that I treat with the utmost of care. Everyone has a different threshold for these items, but I’ll walk you through my method of determining what falls into that category, and how I store those pieces.
We’ll begin the edit by taking out items that are currently out of season. Often this step is handled before I come over, but if you have questions, are unsure of how to store things or where they should go, leave them out and I will guide you to the right solutions. We will also pull out any pieces that you may view as season-specific that can be utilized year round. We will have the Closet Assistant Sheet out and I will be taking notes during the whole process as you decide you need to replace those jeans, you’d love to find a new pair of shoes for that dress, or you need a new bra to make that top work.
We start by trying on questionable pieces; something you’ve been holding on to yet never wear, a color you’re unsure of, a piece you don’t really know how to style. Each person’s edit will vary based on their needs, but the majority of the time is spent creating new outfits within your existing wardrobe and eliminating pieces that no longer serve you.
As we try on your question pieces, I’ll help you come up with as many ways to wear them as possible. We’ll take as many photos as we can so you can look back on a variety of outfit combinations the next time you’re unsure of what to wear. We will do the same with your favorite pieces that you know are staying; we will get creative within your space and will find new ways to wear items you already own and love, and I'll recommend options to add so you can amplify what you already own.
Once we’ve done the heavy lifting, you get to relax while I put everything back in order. We’ll discuss if you’d like a different flow of how your clothes are organized, and I’ll provide suggestions on where each section should go. You are welcome to stay while I organize, or leave me to it and I’ll explain my full process to you in detail when I’m done. We’ll also go over drawer space, jewelry storage, where your shoes are and how you display larger accessories like hats and bags. If you’d like help finding new storage solutions, we’ll measure drawers and shelves before I go, and those will be added to your list of purchases when I'm finished. You’ll also have a rundown of how I organize clothes so you can put it back together when things get out of hand.
It depends on the size of the closet, but this process is usually done in 4-6 hours. For larger scale closets that require 8 hours or more, there will be an additional charge of $75 per hour. We’ll be checking in on time as we go through the process, and it’s normal to need breaks as we go. If you’d like to do this over two days, we can make that happen.
I leave with the full list of what we’d like to add into your closet, and will provide a list of items for you to purchase. You’ll have the list within one week, including detailed style notes of how to incorporate these pieces into your wardrobe, and links to each option. You are responsible for all purchases, returns and exchanges. I will be available to you should you need support on deciding what to buy, or how something might work in your wardrobe.
When we are done with the edit, there are generally four piles of pieces that need to be dealt with: pieces that need to be altered, donated, sold, and thrown away. I will recommend locations for alterations if you need suggestions. I will guide you through where to sell your pieces that are in great condition, and that will depend on the level of quality, if you own any designer pieces, and how much effort you’d like to put into it. For the pieces that need to be donated, I will take them to be donated for you if you do not already have a place you’d like them to go.
If you’d like additional support beyond the edit, there are add-on options that you can read about on the 1:1 Styling page.
If you’d like to discuss if this option is the best fit for you, please reach out and we can go over options. I’d be honored to help you create your dream closet and make getting dressed an enjoyable experience.
