A Beginner's Guide To Pattern Mixing

Do you ever try to mix patterns and give up because it all feels too busy? It can seem overwhelming to wear one pattern, let alone two, so I thought I would shed some light on a few ways to make it more approachable.

Tips for pattern mixing:

Break them up so they're visually separated

When beginning with pattern mixing, keep them separated by an article of clothing in a solid color:

A printed cardigan with a solid top, solid pant, and a printed flat.

Printed neck scarf, solid sweater, printed skirt, solid shoe.

Choose patterns in a similar color way

Leopard print is usually black and brown, so pairing that with another black + brown pattern will help them flow seamlessly. This can be applied for wearing just one pattern as well; pairing a leopard print sweater with a black pant will tie the two together.

Choose two that have a different vibe

Stripe and leopard: stripe is classic, leopard is sassy.

Tie dye and polka dot: tie dye is more bold, polka dot is more sweet.

Remember - style is all about balance, especially with patterns!

Do you have any patterned pieces you avoid wearing because you're not sure how to style them? Try one of these tips and let me know how it works for you!
